Traditional Chinese reedpipe; lowest note D, note with 3 holes open G, 24.5” long; combines the tube and fingerholes of the flute with the free reed of the sheng for a unique tone color. Made of bamboo, 7 hole on top with a thumb hole on the side, one octave plus one note, In 5ths from G- Key of D has a white plastic lip plate to blow, more pressure for the low notes and gentle pressure for the higher ones. The reed is inside a small lip plate but it’s not like a bagpipe reed but rather more like a harmonica reed. The bawu looks like a transverse flute when played, but sounds quite different and was featured on the soundtrack to “Croughin Tiger Hidden Dragon”.
