This traditional bowed dulcimer of Iceland first appeared in the 16th century. It has 3 steel strings tuned g G g with a chromatic fingerboard. The strings may be bowed or plucked like a traditional mountain dulcimer. When bowed, the melody string may be played alone or with 1 or both drones. The sound is haunting and ethereal, with overtones similar to those of the Hardangerfel and Nyckelharpa. Constructed of solid hardwoods, this instrument would make a fine addition to any dulcimer collection.
