Beautiful mandolins from a local maker here in Berkeley.

A small bodied mandolin loosely model on the Flatiron instruments of the 80’s.  This mandolin features a top of quarter sawn fir (salvaged from a crate stored for over 50 years in a dry basement) and back and sides of figured Claro walnut. The neck is of curly Red Maple with ebony fingerboard and peg head veneer. The soundboard and back are built with a slight 15’ radius and braced with Sitka spruce.  Neck is 1.20” / 30mm wide at the nut and supported with a carbon fiber rod. Bindings on body, fingerboard and peghead are of Wenge. It has a bone nut, a non-adjustable maple and ebony bridge, Bill James tailpiece, EVO gold frets and Rubner tuning machines.

This is a fun instrument to play.  It has a surprisingly big voice and a generally bright tone but can still hit the low notes with good resonance and sustain.  Played hard it can cut through and be heard in a jam or when playing on the street but can just as readily be enjoyed playing quiet aires and classic tunes.

Comes with a soft case.
