We were immediately drawn to the warm, honeyed color of these goni wood keys and the handsome simplicity of the cord-lashed frame — this is an instrument that looks as good as it sounds. Playing it for the first time, the resonance that comes up through the mallets is surprising for something so compact, and the gourd chambers underneath add a woody depth that synthetic instruments just cannot replicate. If you have been curious about West African melodic percussion, this balafon from Mali is a genuinely satisfying place to start.
Construction & Materials
The keys are carved from goni wood (pterocarpus erinaceus), a tonewood prized by West African instrument makers for its density and resonant clarity. Each bar is hand-shaped and suspended above a sturdy wooden frame using traditional natural cord lashing, allowing the keys to vibrate freely with minimal dampening. Beneath each key, a dried gourd resonator amplifies and colors the tone, a hallmark of authentic balafon construction. Two rubber-tipped playing mallets are included with each instrument.
Sound & Playability
The 12-note diatonic layout is tuned to a C major scale starting on G, making it immediately accessible for melodic exploration without the need to read music. The gourd resonators give each note a round, organic bloom that sustains naturally after the strike. The compact size — approximately 25 inches overall length — makes this instrument easy to set on a table or lap for extended playing sessions. Beginners and experienced percussionists alike will find the layout intuitive and rewarding.
About This Instrument
The balafon is one of the oldest melodic percussion instruments in West Africa, with roots stretching back many centuries in the cultures of Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. Traditionally played by jeli (griots), the hereditary musicians of the Mande people, it carries deep cultural significance as a vehicle for storytelling, ceremony, and community celebration. This 12-note version offers an accessible entry into that tradition while using the same tonewoods and construction methods that have defined the instrument for generations. Each instrument is individually handcrafted, so minor variation in color and finishing is a natural part of authentic production.
Care & Maintenance
Store the balafon away from extreme humidity and direct heat sources, which can cause the goni wood keys to warp or crack over time. Periodically inspect the natural cord lashing and replace any frayed segments to maintain key spacing and resonance. Wipe the keys gently with a dry or lightly dampened cloth after playing. The gourd resonators are fragile — handle the instrument with care during transport and avoid placing heavy objects on the playing surface.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
