Check out the craftsmanship on this metal balafon from Mali — the hand-tied keys, the warm amber gourds, and that buzzing, alive quality you only get from a true West African resonator instrument. It sits beautifully on its hardwood frame and feels genuinely playable from the moment you pick up the mallets. If you have been curious about traditional Mande percussion, this is a compelling and accessible way in.
Construction & Materials
This balafon is built on a sturdy hardwood frame with angled cross-brace legs that give the instrument a stable, low-profile playing position. Twelve metal keys, graduated in length from approximately 13.25 inches down to 9.5 inches, are suspended above the frame using natural cord lashing in the traditional West African style. Below each key sits a rounded natural gourd resonator. Each gourd features a small hole fitted with a thin membrane that vibrates sympathetically as the key is struck, producing the characteristic buzzing overtone that defines the balafon sound. The frame uprights are wrapped in natural fiber cord, consistent with traditional construction methods from Mali.
Sound & Playability
The metal keys give this balafon a brighter, more penetrating tone than its wooden counterpart, while the gourd resonators add warmth and projection. The mirliton membranes stretched across each gourd opening create that distinctive vibrating timbre — a resonant buzz layered beneath each note that is central to West African balafon tradition. The 12-note range covers a pentatonic-style layout suited to traditional Mande melodic patterns. Two rubber-tipped playing mallets are included with each instrument, and the relatively compact overall length of 25.5 inches makes this an easy instrument to set up and play at home, in a classroom, or at a performance.
About This Instrument
The balafon is one of the oldest and most revered percussion instruments of West Africa, with deep roots in the Mande musical traditions of Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. Historically played by griots — hereditary musicians and oral historians — the balafon has been central to ceremony, storytelling, and communal celebration for centuries. This metal-key version draws on that heritage while offering a distinct tonal character of its own. The overall dimensions are approximately 25.5 inches in length and 10 inches in height, making it a compact and displayable piece alongside its musical function.
Care & Maintenance
Store the balafon in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity extremes, both of which can affect the natural gourd resonators and the membrane covers. Wipe the metal keys down with a soft dry cloth after playing to remove moisture from hands. Avoid submerging or wetting the gourds, as this can damage the thin membranes. The natural cord lashings should be checked periodically; if any loosen over time, they can be re-tied with natural fiber twine to maintain proper key suspension and resonance.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
