Check out this Iida tenor banjo. The ornate hearts and floral mother-of-pearl inlay running up the fingerboard give it a character that's genuinely hard to find on vintage instruments at this level. It sits comfortably in the hands, and the brass-tone hardware catches the light in a way that makes it feel both historic and alive.

Construction & Materials

This vintage Iida tenor banjo features a dark rosewood-style fingerboard adorned with elaborate mother-of-pearl hearts and floral inlays. The pot is fitted with a decorative cutout flange and gold-tone hardware throughout, including hooks, brackets, a notched tension hoop, and a cast tailpiece with four slots. The smooth banjo head carries an "Elite" label and displays a warm, aged patina consistent with an instrument from approximately the 1970s. A dark-stained wooden resonator is fitted to the back. The engraved armrest adds another layer of decorative craftsmanship typical of higher-tier Japanese production of the era.

Sound & Playability

As a 4-string tenor banjo, this Iida is well-suited to Irish traditional music, jazz, and early folk styles. The brass-tone hardware and resonator back project sound forward with clarity and presence. The compensating bridge is positioned for accurate intonation across the fingerboard. The hearts and flowers inlay pattern is not merely decorative — it marks this as a model intended for players who expected both performance and visual distinction from their instrument.

About This Instrument

This banjo is a consignment piece from a private collection, with a previous owner who was a Mummer — a tradition rooted in string band performance and festive musical culture. Iida instruments were produced in Japan during the 1970s and were distributed through various American retailers; they represent a respected chapter in the history of affordable yet quality-conscious banjo making. This example comes with its original case for safe storage and transport.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe the body and hardware down with a soft, dry cloth after playing to prevent moisture buildup. The banjo head should be checked periodically for tension, particularly with seasonal humidity changes. Store the instrument in its included case when not in use to protect the finish and hardware. A light application of fingerboard conditioner on the rosewood-style fretboard will help preserve its feel and appearance over time.
