Construction & Materials

This double harmony flute is hand-formed from terra-cotta clay in the Teotihuacan tradition, fired for 12 hours to produce a dense, resonant body built to last. The rich reddish-brown surface tells the story of that firing process, with depth of tone running through every inch of the approximately 14.5-inch form. A prominently hand-sculpted Mesoamerican figure wearing an elaborate headdress rises in relief from the upper body, rendered with the same care and precision applied to the instrument itself. Each flute is a one-of-a-kind sculptural work as much as it is a musical instrument.

Sound & Playability

Tuned in the keys of G and D, this double-chamber flute produces a rich harmonic blend that single-bore clay flutes simply cannot achieve. The dual voices complement one another naturally, creating a full, layered tone with warmth characteristic of fired terra-cotta. Nash Tavewa builds his flutes for strong intonation and genuine playability, making this instrument accessible to curious beginners and satisfying to experienced players who appreciate authentic acoustic character. The fipple-style mouthpiece allows for a direct, responsive breath connection throughout the tonal range.

About This Instrument

Nash Tavewa belongs to the Bene Walash (Zapotec) culture of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico, and draws from a family lineage in traditional pottery and flute-making that stretches back to pre-Columbian times. His craft encompasses clay flutes, ceremonial figurines, and whistles passed down through generations. In 1998, Nash began a four-year apprenticeship under celebrated Native American flute and drum maker Guillermo Martinez, deepening his mastery of tuning, form, and construction. The result is a flute that carries both ancient Mesoamerican iconography and a refined, contemporary playing experience. Lark in the Morning is proud to offer Nash's work to musicians and collectors worldwide.

Care & Maintenance

Terra-cotta clay is a naturally porous material and should be kept dry when not in use. Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can stress the fired clay body. Handle with care, as ceramic instruments can be brittle if dropped. Store in a padded case or wrapped in soft cloth to protect both the tone holes and the hand-sculpted relief carving. Moisture from playing is normal and will dissipate on its own after each session.
