The bodhrán is an Irish frame drum.  It ranges in diameter from 9 to 25 inches, with a side depth of between 3 and 8 inches. It has (usually) one or two crossbars inside the frame.  There is a skin(or synthetic skin) head.  Many modern ones are tunable.

It is generally played with a turned wood tipper or beater.

The origin is contentious, with some claiming an origin in the mid 19th century.  Others say the early 20th century. Or perhaps it is of Celtic pre-Christian origin. Drums of a similar style have been found in many cultures across the globe.
