The Saz, probably the most well-known Turkish instrument, is from a family of plucked stringed instruments and long-necked lutes and has been used in Ottoman classical music, Turkish folk, Arabesque, Azerbaijani, Kurdish, and Armenian music and is played in parts of Syria, Iraq and the Balkan countries.

Unlike traditional fretted instruments (like the guitar), with the use of quarter tone frets (frets within frets) more traditional Eastern and Arabic scales can be accessed.
