Around the turn of the 18th century, the chalumeau was modified by converting one of its keys into a register key to produce the first clarinet. This development is usually attributed to German instrument maker Johann Christoph Denner, though some have suggested his son Jacob Denner was the inventor. This instrument played well in the middle register with a loud, shrill sound, so it was given the name clarinetto meaning "little trumpet".
Early clarinets did not play well in the lower register, so players continued to play the chalumeaux for low notes. As clarinets improved, the chalumeau fell into disuse, and these notes became known as the chalumeau register. Original Denner clarinets had two keys, and could play a chromatic scale, but various makers added more keys to get improved tuning, easier fingerings, and a slightly larger range. The classical clarinet of Mozart's day typically had eight finger holes and five keys.

Broke my more decorative drum protesting
I bought this bodhran after I broke my more decorative one while protesting. I’m one of four women who are Drumming for Democracy every week at our local Saturday protest.

It's a Beauty
The DG-255 I received from Lark in the Morning was easily as beautiful as presented. The padded gig bag is a huge plus as well.
The guitar is a solid and has a bigger, more forward sound than I'd anticipated which suits me just fine. It plays easily, surely even more so after I have a guitar tech get it set up for me.
Nice people, excellent service, quick shipping. Nothing not to like here.

Great Whistle and Super Fast Shipping
This whistle has a beautiful, warm tone and is very responsive. I have used a variety of whistles (including other Kerry whistles), and this one is my favorite to play. While recording my latest album, I needed a whistle in this key pretty quickly, and Lark in the Morning had this delivered to me within a few days. I highly recommend this instrument, and Lark in the Morning is a fantastic place to purchase from with excellent customer service.

Awesome instrument
I already play a mountain lap dulcimer, but this one gives the instrument a whole different dimension to playing. Really beautiful craftsmanship. Thus isn’t a toy, but a lovely wooden instrument. Very easy to play!
