On its surface, the shakuhachi appears quite simple, and is traditionally made of bamboo. In its most basic form, it is a tube with finger holes: four holes on the front and one on the back, along with a blowing edge at the top (called utaguchi) and a hole at the bottom near the root. So what's the story behind this instrument, and how has it become such an important element of Japanese traditional music?
This type of end-blown bamboo flute first came from China to Korea and then to Japan during the 6-7th century as one of the instruments in Gagaku (Asian orchestra). The shape was different from today (six holes), and it eventually fell out of favor in Gagaku, being less loud and less stable in pitch than similar-sounding instruments (such as sho and hichiriki). Today, the fuke shakuhachi that was developed in Japan is the variety that has survived, making it very much a Japanese traditional instrument.

Plays like a dream
Plays like a dream. I have MS and am no longer able to play guitar, but this uke let's me play songs again and sing. I had no idea how much I'd missed having music in my body. Thanks, Lark!

Just what my harp needed!
I was looking for the right equipment for my Camac Isolde Celtic harp. I did NOT want to install the Dusty Strings pick-ups- seemed like way too much to add. This little gizmo was easy to install with the little pictures on placement- like, less than five minutes easy. I plugged the pickup into my new Roland Mobile Cube and it’s perfect! I don’t hear any sound distortion, and I think this will be just right when playing background music for noisier environments. Super happy with this!

Awesome quality!
I was excited to receive this kit. I do have several banjos already; however, I did not have a mountain banjo. I have built gourd banjos and ekontings (I went to Gambia in 2004 and 2007 to learn how to play and make them) from scratch, so I am not a beginner in terms of making instruments. I had a lot of fun putting the kit together. I do have a few observations regarding tips or slight modifications in the instruction manual, if interested.
Thanks!
