This balafon is a compact instrument with real personality, and it feels right at home whether you are exploring West African rhythms for the first time or adding a distinctive voice to a world music ensemble.

Construction & Materials

This 8-note balafon is built in the West African tradition, with rectangular metal keys graduated in length from approximately 11.5 inches down to 8.25 inches. The keys are mounted on a sturdy dark frame, and beneath each key sits a natural gourd resonator that amplifies and projects the sound. The frame measures approximately 16.75 inches in overall length and stands approximately 4.5 inches in height. Two rubber-tipped playing mallets are included with each instrument.

Sound & Playability

Where a wooden balafon delivers warm, woody tones, this metal-keyed version produces a bright, clear, and cutting sound with noticeable sustain. The gourd resonators beneath each key add body and volume, drawing out overtones that give the instrument a surprisingly rich acoustic presence. The 8-note range makes it approachable for beginners while still offering enough musical depth for experienced players to explore melodic patterns and traditional West African balafon repertoire.

*** Each of this balafon's gourd resonators are specially adapted with a small hole covered by a film, which then creates a "buzzing" sound when the metal tone bars are played. ***

About This Instrument

The balafon is one of the oldest instruments in West Africa, with roots stretching back over a thousand years across Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and neighboring regions. Traditionally played by Griot musicians, it remains a central voice in ceremonies, celebrations, and storytelling. This metal interpretation preserves the gourd resonator design that defines the instrument's acoustic character while giving it a distinctive tonal brightness and visual presence. It is sourced from Mali, connecting players directly to the living tradition behind the instrument.

Care & Maintenance

Wipe the metal keys down after playing to prevent moisture buildup and preserve their finish. Store the instrument in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, which can degrade the natural gourd resonators over time. The included rubber-tipped mallets are well suited for everyday playing and help protect the surface of the keys. Avoid striking the instrument with hard objects or excessive force, as the gourd resonators can be fragile.
