Construction & Materials
These rhythm bones are crafted from Vermillion wood, a dense tropical hardwood prized for its rich reddish-brown color and smooth, consistent grain. Each piece measures approximately 7 and a half inches in length and 1 inch in width, with a thickness of 3/16 inch. The flat profile distinguishes them from curved styles, offering a low-profile feel between the fingers that many players find precise and controlled. The surface is polished to a clean finish that highlights the natural warmth of the wood.
Sound & Playability
The flat geometry of these bones produces a crisp, articulate click that carries clearly in both intimate and open settings. Vermillion wood delivers a bright, focused tone with good projection. The slender profile keeps the bones close together in the hand, allowing for fast rhythmic passages and clear separation between strikes. Players of all levels will find the flat style responsive and easy to hold from the first session.
About This Instrument
Rhythm bones are one of the oldest percussion traditions in North America, rooted in Celtic, African American, and minstrel musical heritage. Played in pairs held between the fingers of one hand, they produce rhythmic patterns through a loose, flicking wrist motion. From jigs and reels to old-time and folk music, bones remain a vital part of acoustic percussion traditions worldwide. This pair from Lark in the Morning represents that heritage in a compact, accessible format suited to beginners and seasoned players alike.
Care & Maintenance
Keep the bones dry and away from prolonged humidity or direct heat, which can cause warping in thin wooden instruments. Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth after playing. Occasional conditioning with a light wood oil will preserve the natural luster of the Vermillion wood and protect the surface over time. Store flat in a pouch or case to prevent accidental cracking.

My second pair from LITM, and I seem more efficient on these rather than the more oval version. Now if I could only master my other hand. Both are absolutely beautiful and sound sweet. Thank You

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
