Construction & Materials
These rhythm bones are crafted from ebony, a dense and finely grained hardwood prized for its natural weight and smooth surface. The flat profile sets them apart from curved styles, offering a consistent feel across the full length of each piece. Measuring approximately 7 1/2 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 3/16 inch thick, the pair is sized for a natural, secure hold in one hand. The polished finish allows the bones to glide and click with precision on every stroke.
Sound & Playability
The density of ebony produces a bright, articulate click that carries well in both intimate and open performance settings. The flat construction delivers a direct, consistent strike, making it easier to develop rhythmic patterns and controlled rolls. Players who prefer a thinner profile will find these bones respond quickly and reward a light, relaxed technique. They suit traditional folk, old-time, and minstrel styles as well as contemporary percussion practice.
About This Instrument
Rhythm bones are one of the oldest known percussion instruments, with roots in folk traditions across Ireland, the British Isles, and early American music. Played in pairs, they are held loosely in one hand and struck together using a wrist-snapping motion to produce rapid rhythmic figures. Flat-style bones like these represent a distinct variation in the bones tradition, favored by players who want a trim, pocketable instrument with a clean, even feel. Every bones player benefits from exploring different profiles and materials to find the response that suits their style.
Care & Maintenance
Ebony is a naturally dense and stable wood that requires minimal upkeep. Keep the bones dry and store them away from prolonged direct sunlight or extreme humidity changes to preserve the finish and prevent warping. Occasionally wiping with a dry cloth after use will maintain the polished surface. No oiling is required for this wood type under normal playing conditions.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
