Construction & Materials
Handcrafted in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, this McSpadden 3-string bass mountain dulcimer features a redwood soundboard paired with cherry back and sides. Redwood delivers a warm, open tone with excellent sustain, while cherry contributes a focused midrange presence and beautiful reddish warmth to the instrument's appearance. Three heart-shaped soundholes are cut into the body, a signature McSpadden detail that reflects the maker's Appalachian folk heritage. Strap buttons are installed and matched to the tuning pegs for a cohesive, polished build.
Sound & Playability
Built as a 3-string dulcimer and tuned to D-A-D standard, this bass model features a 28 1/2 inch vibrating string length that produces a full, resonant bass voice suited for ensemble play and deeper tonal exploration. The bass fretboard includes a 1 1/2 fret in addition to the standard 6 1/2 and 13 1/2 frets, expanding harmonic range for adventurous players. The instrument can also be tuned to C-G-c for the Key of C or to D-G-d for a Key of G new Ionian pattern, offering versatility across folk and traditional styles.
About This Instrument
McSpadden Dulcimers has been crafting instruments in Mountain View, Arkansas, known widely as the Folk Music Capital of the World, for decades. Each instrument comes with a lifetime warranty, reflecting the builder's confidence in long-term craftsmanship. This dulcimer ships with a standard padded nylon case, a pick, and a noter. Wood grain patterns vary naturally from instrument to instrument, making each one unique. Please allow approximately 4 to 6 weeks for delivery as these instruments are built to order.
Care & Maintenance
Store this dulcimer in its included padded nylon case away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Wipe down strings and the fretboard after playing to extend string life and protect the wood finish. Periodically check and tighten tuning pegs as needed. For long-term care, use a humidifier in dry climates to protect the solid wood construction from cracking or warping.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
