This new pennywhistle from Lark in the Morning sits nicely in the hand, light and well-balanced, and the key of A gives it a bright, lifted quality that feels right at home in Irish session music or modal folk playing. If you have been curious about trying a whistle that plays a little differently from the common D, this one in A is a genuinely compelling choice.
Construction & Materials
This pennywhistle features a cylindrical nickel body finished in a striking matte black, paired with a polished brass fipple head. The two-piece construction allows for minor tuning adjustments by sliding the head in or out. Six precisely placed tone holes run along the body, and the instrument is marked with the key of A near the mid-section. The combination of nickel and brass gives this whistle a durable, stable feel that stands up well to regular playing.
Sound & Playability
Tuned to the key of A, this pennywhistle produces a clear, bright tone that projects well in both solo and session settings. The key of A is particularly useful for playing alongside fiddles, guitars, and other folk instruments without constant transposing. The brass fipple head channels a steady, focused airstream, helping players achieve a clean, responsive sound across two octaves. Beginners will appreciate the forgiving response, while more experienced players will find plenty of nuance available through breath control and ornamentation technique.
About This Instrument
The pennywhistle, also known as the tin whistle or feadóg, is a simple six-hole fipple flute with deep roots in Irish and Celtic folk traditions. Despite its modest construction, it is capable of extraordinary expressiveness in skilled hands. This model in A is designed to offer reliable intonation and playable response at an accessible level. The key of A is less common than the standard D, making this a useful addition to any whistle player's collection and an interesting starting point for those exploring alternate keys.
Care & Maintenance
After playing, gently remove the brass head and allow both sections to air out. Moisture can accumulate in the fipple windway during extended sessions; a soft, dry cloth or pipe cleaner can be used to clear any buildup. Avoid leaving the instrument in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, as this can affect both the metal finish and intonation. Occasional light buffing with a soft cloth will help maintain the appearance of the brass head and nickel body over time.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
