Construction & Materials
This double ratchet is crafted entirely from sheesham, a dense and resonant hardwood prized throughout South Asia for its durability and rich grain character. The rectangular paddle body is finished to a smooth, natural surface that reveals the wood's warm reddish-brown tones and striking figure. Two gear wheels are integrated into the top edge of the body, each with its own set of flexible wooden tongues. The cylindrical handle is turned smoothly from the same sheesham stock, offering a secure and comfortable grip during performance.
Sound & Playability
Spinning the ratchet by its handle causes the wooden tongues to lock into and release from both gear wheels in rapid succession, producing a loud, bright clack-clack-clack-clack. The dual-gear design doubles the number of strikes per revolution compared to a single-gear ratchet, resulting in a faster, denser rhythmic pattern and greater overall volume. The all-wood construction gives the sound a warm, organic character rather than the sharp crack of plastic alternatives. This instrument responds immediately to changes in spin speed, giving the player direct dynamic control.
About This Instrument
Ratchets belong to a percussion family found across European, Latin American, and global folk traditions. They appear in orchestral scores, carnival processions, Mardi Gras bands, and classroom music settings alike. The double ratchet, with its two interlocking gears, is particularly valued when a fuller, more continuous rattle texture is needed. Measuring approximately 7 inches in overall length, this instrument from DOBANI is compact enough to travel easily and sturdy enough for regular use in live performance, music education, and ensemble settings. It is an accessible entry point for percussionists exploring world rhythm traditions.
Care & Maintenance
Store the ratchet in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes, as wood can expand, contract, or warp with humidity changes. Wipe the surface with a dry or slightly damp cloth to remove dust and handling residue. Avoid submerging the instrument in water or using harsh chemical cleaners. Periodically inspect the gear teeth and tongue strips for signs of wear or loosening, and allow the instrument to acclimate gradually if moving it between very different climate conditions.

This instrument is much much louder than I expected. I regret having purchased it, because I won't be using it at all. Too loud. Unpleasant. :-(
Awesome!

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
