Construction & Materials

This large professional-grade Yangqin features a maple wood frame built for durability and tonal stability. The soundboard construction combines a Dongbei pine soundboard rib with a maple soundboard and paulownia wood topboard, a combination long favored in Chinese instrument making for its balanced resonance. Covered panels protect the tuning pins on both sides, and the instrument includes an integrated folding stand. Decorative brass inlay work in a traditional Chinese knotwork pattern adorns each side panel, reflecting the instrument's cultural heritage. A tuning wrench is included, as is a rolling hard case with wheels for easier transport.

Sound & Playability

Spanning a full 4-octave chromatic range, this Yangqin is suited to a wide variety of musical settings, from traditional Chinese orchestral repertoire to contemporary and experimental performance. Multiple bridge sections are arranged across the soundboard to organize the chromatic layout, with color-coded markers on the bridge pins to help orient players quickly. The dense steel string courses produce the bright, sustaining tone the Yangqin is known for, with clarity across all registers. This instrument is large in scale and intended for the serious player who needs a full chromatic instrument.

About This Instrument

The Yangqin (揚琴) is a hammered dulcimer with roots stretching back to instruments brought to China along ancient trade routes. Over centuries it was refined into a central voice of Chinese chamber and orchestral music, played with a pair of lightweight bamboo beaters. Today it is used across a broad range of styles, from classical Chinese ensemble music to crossover and world music contexts. This used instrument shows light dust and surface scratches consistent with prior performance use and is sold as-is. Due to its size and substantial build, in-store pickup is strongly recommended if you are able to arrange it.

Care & Maintenance

Store the Yangqin in its included hard case when not in use to protect the soundboard and strings from humidity fluctuations and dust. Use the included tuning wrench for regular pitch adjustments. Wipe down the strings and soundboard lightly with a dry cloth after playing. Avoid exposing the instrument to direct sunlight or extreme temperature changes, which can affect the wooden components and string tension over time.
