Construction & Materials
The MacArthur Harp is built on a tradition of early American instrument making. Its body is shaped from solid hardwoods with a spruce soundboard, a combination long prized for producing a clear, projecting tone. Decorative wood binding accents the soundboard edges, and a round soundhole sits centrally on the top. The long curved arm that defines the instrument's silhouette is carved from a single piece of hardwood, lending the instrument both visual elegance and structural integrity. Tuning pins are arranged along two planes, keeping strings well-organized and accessible. The natural satin finish allows the wood to breathe and resonate freely.
Sound & Playability
The MacArthur Harp offers 11 melody strings spanning a 1.5-octave diatonic scale beginning at G above Middle C, accompanied by 3 sets of chord strings tuned to C, G7, and F in standard configuration. Players pluck the melody strings to carry a tune while strumming or plucking the chord strings to provide harmonic accompaniment, making it possible to perform as a self-contained solo instrument. The open, resonant tone carries well in intimate settings. Many alternate tunings are possible, giving experienced players room to explore beyond the stock configuration.
About This Instrument
This instrument honors the memory of Margaret MacArthur, the beloved Vermont folk singer and ethnomusicologist who brought the harp-zither to wider audiences through her concerts and field recordings. The design replicates the Harp-O-Chord, a harp-zither invented by Carl E. Brown and manufactured in the early 1900s by the Harp-O-Chord Company. Lark in the Morning carries this replica as part of its commitment to preserving the folk instrument traditions of North America. It suits folk, traditional, and early American repertoire and is accessible to players at nearly any skill level.
Care & Maintenance
Store the MacArthur Harp in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and humidity extremes, as wood is sensitive to rapid changes in temperature and moisture. Wipe down the strings and body with a soft dry cloth after playing to remove oils and debris. Tune regularly using a chromatic tuner, and inspect tuning pins periodically for any loosening. If strings show signs of corrosion or uneven tone, replace them promptly to maintain the instrument's voice.

Nice sound
This was my first ever Hardanger, so I basically wanted a "Squier" version of a Hardanger: an entry level Hardanger to learn on that was new and solid but wouldn't break the bank. This has been pretty much perfect and just what I wanted.I love playing it.
Beautiful amazing instrument! Easy and fun to play! Highly recommended! Great customer service and fast shipping!!
Jackie arrived, nicely packed and in rapid order... much lighter than I expected, thank goodness as the instrument is attached to the player by their thumbs (and mine are kind of old).
I never thought that it would be so challenging for me to learn play ... so different from anything I've tried before... I can feel the neurons in my brain sparking and protesting. Actually, it feels good to build new pathways. The cat is none too pleased with my new endeavor. However, Jackie is a beautiful instrument, well made and of good quality. I'm sure, in time, we'll become the best of friends.
Thanks to all at Lark in the Morning for making my experience so pleasant and trouble free. <3
The external Twin Spot works great on my Irish Bouzouki. I've scotched taped the pickup heads and wires it in place for easy adjustment, and the pick up sensitivity is very good. I'm running it through my guitar DI box for increased sensitivity and tone control.
